A story about Stories: how user research inspires new products at Instagram

Jamie Nicholson

Instagram @ UX Research Lead

Are you getting the most out of your user research team? Many product teams use research to help validate their ideas and ensure their product is easy and intuitive to use, but fewer will use research as a generative tool to inspire new product ideas and strategy. In this talk, Jamie walk you through his personal journey trying to integrate user research into the earlier phases of Instagram’s product development process on the Stories team. Jamie will share how by focusing on user needs up front, before building any product, and asking questions such as “how do people make friends?”, his team was able to create a strategy that helped make Instagram Stories a place used by over 500 million people everyday.
